The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite is actually French in origin, developing in the mid 18th century, probably from Jacobite refugees in Paris.  The rite has 33 degrees and accepts the 3 Craft degrees as its starting point.  The Chapter is responsible for degrees to the 18th and the Council from the 19th to the 30th.  The 31st, 32nd and 33rd degrees are awarded to individuals for their service to the rite.
It requires members to be Craft Master Masons and to profess a Christian belief.
