This Order forms the link between the two Degrees of Mark Master Mason and the Holy Royal Arch, and therefore candidates must be members of both those orders.  It is based on the depositing of the Mason's Word in the Crypt of the First Temple and the intervening  history between the First and Second Temples.
There are a total of four Degrees within the Order of Royal & Select Masters, sometimes known as the Cryptic Degrees, and are Select Master, Royal Master,  Most Excellent Master and Super Excellent Master.
