The Order of the Eastern Star is a mixed order - it welcomes both male and female members. While some traditional jurisdictions around Australia and the world do not recognize it as a regular Masonic order, in Victoria many of its chapters meet at local Masonic centres and enjoy a fruitful partnership promoting Masonic values.
The Order follows a pattern established in 18th century France - the "adoptive" rite - where, originally, the wives, widows, daughters and sisters of Freemasons were able to practise similar rituals and meetings to their male relatives. Developed by Dr Robert Morris in the USA in the 1850s, it is now open to any female relative of a Freemason (by birth, adoption or marriage), and any Freemason. Each chapter is under the direction of a Worthy Matron, assisted by a Worthy Patron.
